Mucormycosis Black fungus after covid-19 ?

It is a rare problem which is found now commonly in post covid patients. It is a fungal disease which is called balck fungus or mucormycosis.

Where are this fungus present around us?

Actually normally this fungi present in the soil and also in decaying matter. Normally these fungus eats decaying matter that’s why they also known as decomposer.

But this fungus can cause infection and disease if our immune system drops. They can cause different types of disease according to their presence in different parts or location of the body and based on where they attack they cause different diseases.

Normally mucormycosis or black fungus is not very common it is very rare because our immune system is very good at protecting us against various kinds of fungi.

Any immuno compromised person can get this from soil or from air particularly from Air conditioner or coolers.

So after covid recovery if person don’t follow the proper routine or immune boosting efforts which are related to diet, exercises and other things then sometime it may happens if person exposed to this spores and gets these black fungus.

Is black fungus deadly?

This is rare but this is deadly other infection that are caused by bacteria or viruses can be treated within few days but infection of fungus took more time to be completely treated some time takes a year.

Where black fungus can occurs?

If black fungus occur in nasal passage, sinus or brain then its called Rhino cerebral mucurmycosis.

If it occurs in lungs then it is called pulmonary mucormycosis.

If it occurs in stomach and intestine then its called Gastrointestinal mucormycosis.

If it occurs in skin then its called cutaneous mucormycosis.

And if it is present in blood stream this is called as disseminated mucormycosis and it is a most deadly form above all.

Symptoms of black fungus or mucormycosis.

In nasal-:

Fever
Weakness
Fatigue
Black spot in mouth

In lungs-:

Chest pain
Difficulty in breathing
Fatigue

In stomach-:

Vomiting
Weakness
Fatigue

In skin-:

Burning sensation in skin
Skin colour may turn black

How mucormycosis is treated?

Black fungus or mucormycosis is treated with antifungal treatment.

Early recognition, diagnosis and prompt administration of appropriate antifungal treatment are important for improving outcomes for patient with mucormycosis.
