Why does Bleeding from gums happen,
Gingivitis or Gum bleeding is the problem which is faced by many peoples around the world, why your gums gets swelled and bleeds?




Gum bleeding or Gingivitis

  • Normally gums are typically is pink, firm, tightly adherent to teeth and most importantly does’nt bleed.  

  •  But because our gums are under constant challenge of microbial attack in the form of soft debris that sticks around the teeth.

  • And this debris with poor oral hygiene starts to accumulates which in turns starts to irritates your gums, and gums react to this in the form of inflammation called as gingivitis or gum bleedings.

  • Change in colour of gums are the earliest sign of progressing poor gums condition.  

  • And when ignored further the inflammatory process or bleeding gums progress to the deeper or harder tissue around the tooth ( around bone and ligaments ).

  • That leads  to a condition called periodontitis or commonly known as Gum disease.

  • Gum bleeding is, many a time can become reversible condition with proper care and treatment which means damaged gums and teeth can be restored back to the healthy condition.

  • But if you ignored it without proper care and treatment bleeding of gums can progressed to periodontitis and leads to irreversible damages around teeth. 









What are the factors that cause gum bleeding:



• Bad oral hygiene- 

If you don’t take care of your teeth, guess  what are you going to have ‘some issues to your mouth. Not brushing or cleaning your gums properly will leads to building up of plaque.

Plaque is a sticky film that can build up and lead to inflammation , redness, and if the person don’t do anything about these signs than eventually lead to bleeding of gums.  






• Microbial attachment

Poor oral hygiene leads to microbial attachment around  the tooth ( dental plaque) that favours  to accumulate plaque around the teeth.



• Malposition of teeth




Gaps between teeth

Teeth which are not align properly, or teeth without proper contact in the upper and lower jaws in front regions. These malposition actually make difficult to proper cleaning of teeth.



• Gum diseases- 

Gingivitis is kind of like the little mild manner brother of periodontitis disease ( aka gum disease ), its a warning sign that if you don’t take action things could get a lot worse condition. Actually bleeding gums is one of the early sign of gingivitis.



• Non-oral related diseases-

There are some medical conditions that are nit specifically diseases of mouth or gums can cause this problem of gums. For example-:
  • Leukaemia

  • Diabetes

  • Haemophilia

  • Scurvy



These are some systemic condition that lead to bleeding of gums.


Only a small percentage of people with bleeding gums have them because of one of these diseases. However, its just remember bleeding of a gum may be a sign of something quite serious.




• Poor diet

A big chance in your diet or eating a lot of crummy, unhealthy foods can leads to mouth problems including gum problems.


Limiting how much sugary, salty or processed foods along with earing food that is full of vitamins and minerals can help to keep your mouth in good health.




• Smoking

It seems like every bad thing that can go wrong in your body can be linked to smoking 🤔 well its for good reason.


 Now you can add smoking to the list of things that can make your gums bleeds.
Smoking causes inflammation or enlarged gums and even gum disease.




• Hormonal imbalance

This is seen more in women’s, women are at more risk fir gum bleeding, the hormonal imbalances in the body increases the risk of gums bleedings in around puberty time.


Pregnancy and menstrual cycle, where there is imbalance in their hormonal condition lead into more of a chances bleeding of a gum. 







• Hormonal replacement therapy

Hormonal replacement therapy also increases chances of bleeding of the gums.




• Fungal disease

Plaque is the initiating factor and main reason for bleeding of gum but there are some condition where in plaque play a secondary role, these condition include -:

Fungal disease in the mouth like candida or oral thrush.


Viral condition like herpes infection or HIV.
Bacterial associated condition like syphilis.
All these conditions can also manifest as bleeding of gums. 









Home care for gum issues:

  • Thorough brushing and flossing will help and go a long way in reducing  the gum problem.

  • Warm saline gargling also beneficial for relieving swelling of gums.

  • Avoid food that get stuck between your teeth.

  • Avoid tobacco products particularly chewing tobacco, it has seen that a number of people who have destroyed their gums tissue from  tobacco or related products.

  • Consider switching to a firm toothpaste, not too hard toothbrush will clean more thoroughly and will stimulate the tissue to promote flow of blood to the area.
