How sun causes tanning| How to remove tanning

If we ignore the sun tanning than Sunlight in moderate amounts is helpful for making Vitamin D also sun light prescribed by doctors can be helpful for immune based skin condition like psoriasis, so in healthy doses sunlight can be good for us.

Sun tanning

The sun helps us to make vitamin D and you can also say as makes us beautiful as bronze tan and of course it does a ton of other amazing things but it can also cause sunburns, aging, saggy skin and many types of skin cancers. So, how to protect from the damaging effects of excess UV.

Different types of sunlight and how they cause cancer:

Sun releases many wavelengths or energies light, the light that reaches the ground is about 53% infrared 43% visible and 4% higher energy ultraviolet light.

Ultraviolet light has the ability to penetrate your skin and causes DNA damage, types of ultraviolet light damage.

Light can be broken up to into three groups based on their wavelength-:

UVC- This has shortest wavelength  and is absorbed by the atmospheric ozone.

UVB- This has largest effect on the top layer of skin and causes like redness, burning or skin cancer.

UVA- This has longest wavelength that reaches deep into the layer of skin and causing aging or wrinkling.

  • The two types of UV that reach us on earth’s surface is UVA and UVB, both types of UV can damaging the skin, but in slightly different way.

  • Between these two UV, UVB is the most damaging form of UV radiation it causes sunburns and increases the risk of cancer. And the UVA is not blocked at all so it can be damaging all year  round at any time during the day.

Visible light reflects through epidermis

  • The upper layer of the skin is called the epidermis, visible light from the sun reflected off the epidermis but UVB penetrates into the skin.

UVB penetrates skin, causes skin damage or tanning

  • In the epidermis UVB react with DNA of cells and causes DNA damages, our skin cells are able to repair DNA damage but with time if enough DNA damage accumulates, skin cancer can form.

  • In the epidermis there are cells called melanocytes, when skin cells are damaged by UV, melanocytes release a dark pigment called melanin.

  • Melanin is present in the skin and absorbs both UVB UVA light, having a lot if this protein makes skin darker.

  • Actually our genetics define how much melanin is present in our body or it can be make in skin when UVB light hits our skin, it only makes through the upper layer but it can still causes direct DNA damage.

  • So our body tries to protect itself by producing more melanin though it can take a few days for the melanin to be produced and actually makes you look tanner.

  • UVA light is quite a bit different its higher energy passed the atmosphere and penetrates your skin even deeper, as a result skin releases stored melanin when UVA light hits your skin.

  • UVA also doesn’t cause direct DNA damage instead it causes the formation of reactive oxygen which in turns cause DNA damage.

  • Any DNA damage could lead to cancer but your body has lot of safeguards and repair mechanisms to fix any issues with the itself. Actually you only get cancer when enough cancer cells pass through all of these safeguards.

How to protect yourself from the deadly cancer causing rays:
